This is step 1 of the "Getting Started" series.
If you have never opened any AI app, this post is for you. In 30 minutes, you will have said your first sentence to an AI.
Why open an AI app first
For a lot of people, what they know about AI stops at the news.
"I heard AI can write articles." "I heard AI can build web pages." "I heard AI is replacing a lot of jobs."
But you have never opened one yourself.
This post fixes that. 30 minutes, NT$0, just your phone.
Step 1: Download an AI app (5 minutes)
Open the App Store or Google Play on your phone.
Search for any one of these 3 (you don't need to install all of them):
| App | Developer | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best known |
| Claude | Anthropic | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Especially good at writing |
| Gemini | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Easiest if you use a Google account |
Tap download. It's free.
Once it's installed, open it and sign up with email or Google. Done in 30 seconds.
🤔 Which of the three should I pick? For your first time, pick ChatGPT. The three are very similar, but ChatGPT's interface is the friendliest for beginners and it has the most tutorials online. You can try the others later.
Step 2: Start your first conversation (5 minutes)
Open the app and you will see a text box. It works like a chat in LINE, the messaging app most people in Taiwan use.
Today's goal: say one sentence to the AI. Don't overthink it, just type something in.
If you have no idea what to type, try this first:
I've never used AI. I want to learn AI but I have no idea where to start.
I am a [your job / what you do]. Can you give me a 5-minute suggestion for getting started?
Hit send.
Wait 3-5 seconds and the AI will reply with a paragraph.
Read it, then do one thing: ask it a follow-up question.
Any question works. For example:
- "What do you mean by this X?"
- "I already know Y, so how should I do Z?"
- "Give me a concrete example."
That is the core of talking to AI: ask → read the answer → ask again. There is no end button.
Step 3: 5 questions you can ask today (15 minutes)
Pick 3 and try them. Start a new conversation for each one.
1. Solve a problem you ran into today
I ran into a problem at work today: [describe it specifically].
Please give me 3 possible ways to solve it, with a short explanation of each.
2. Learn something you want to learn
I want to learn [photography / investing / cooking / dancing / anything],
starting from zero.
Please give me a 4-week learning plan, spending only 3 hours a week.
3. Write a formal message
I need to write an email to [a client / my manager / a teacher].
What I want to say: [the thing you want to get across]
Please write a version that is formal but not stiff. Under 150 words.
4. Summarise a long article you can't get through
Copy and paste an article you don't want to read to the end, and add one line:
Please summarise this in 3 points.
5. Ask the AI about itself
Compared with other AIs (Claude / Gemini),
what are you best at? What are you worst at?
Please answer honestly, don't be polite.
Number 5 practises your ability to ask AI real questions. That is the core skill the next few posts go deeper into.
Step 4: What to do when the AI gets it wrong (5 minutes)
AI says wrong things. It makes things up. Its tone can be strange. It can miss what you actually wanted.
Don't give up. Correct it:
Scenario A: The answer is too long / too short
Too long. Please condense it to 50 words.
or
Too brief. Can you expand on point 2?
Scenario B: Wrong direction
You misunderstood. I want X, not Y.
Please re-read what I asked and then answer again.
Scenario C: You don't understand a word the AI used
The [word] you just used: please explain it in words a junior high student could understand.
Scenario D: You catch the AI making things up
I can't find [that statement] anywhere. Please give me a source,
or tell me honestly that you're not sure.
AI is not a search engine. It makes things up. Your role is not "the person who accepts the answer". It is "the person who checks the answer". If you are using AI for a thesis, Is Using AI for Your Thesis Cheating? covers what to check and where the line between collaboration and ghostwriting sits.
30 minutes are up: what did you get done?
✅ Downloaded an AI app ✅ Said your first sentence to an AI ✅ Asked at least 3 real questions ✅ Know that AI makes mistakes, and how to correct it
That is what "having opened" AI means. You are now ahead of the 90% who have never opened one.
What's next?
Open it again tomorrow and ask 3 more real questions you ran into that day.
Use it once a day for 7 days in a row → you will build the instinct to "ask AI as soon as a question comes up". This is the most important first step in learning AI: not learning a tool, but building a habit.
After 7 days, you will want to read the next post on your own: P2: Why You Don't Need to Learn to Code.
📲 Want to send this to a friend?
If a friend keeps asking you how to start learning AI, copy this into LINE or a text message:
Hey, you asked me the other day how to learn AI.
This one takes 30 minutes to get through:

FAQ
How do I start using ChatGPT on my phone?
Open the App Store or Google Play on your phone, search for ChatGPT and download it. The app is free. Once it is installed, open it and sign up with email or Google, which takes about 30 seconds. You will see a text box that works like a chat in LINE: type one sentence, hit send, and the AI replies in about 3 to 5 seconds.
ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini: which should a beginner pick first?
For your first time, pick ChatGPT. The three are very similar, but ChatGPT's interface is the friendliest for beginners and it has the most tutorials online. Claude is especially good at writing and Gemini is easiest if you use a Google account, so you can try them later.
Does it cost money to learn ChatGPT on a phone?
Not to get started. The app is free to download and the account does not cost anything. The steps in this guide take 30 minutes, NT$0 and just your phone.
What should I ask ChatGPT the first time?
If you have no idea what to type, start with: 'I've never used AI. I want to learn AI but I have no idea where to start. I am a [your job / what you do]. Can you give me a 5-minute suggestion for getting started?' After reading the reply, ask a follow-up question such as 'Give me a concrete example.' The core of talking to AI is ask, read the answer, ask again. There is no end button.
What do I do when ChatGPT's answer is wrong, too long or confusing?
Don't give up, correct it. If it is too long, say 'Too long. Please condense it to 50 words.' If it went the wrong way, say 'You misunderstood. I want X, not Y.' If you don't understand a word, ask it to explain in words a junior high student could understand. If you catch it making things up, ask for a source or for it to say honestly that it is not sure. AI is not a search engine and it makes things up, so your role is to check the answer.
