Being Cited by an AI Overview Does Not Mean It Said What You Said: How a 98,020-Claim Study Measured It
A May 2026 preprint split Google AI Overviews into 98,020 claims and checked each against the pages the Overview itself cited: 11.0% were not supported, of which 7.0% were not mentioned on the cited page and 2.7% were contradicted by it. This post unpacks the method and its limits, and separates a common mistake: the widely quoted 60% trigger rate comes from a different study with a different denominator. Google Now Pays for AI Citations, and the Search Console API Cannot Measure Them
Google confirmed the AI contribution pilot: content that significantly contributes to answers in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini gets paid, through Search Console.
